A former hospital in Kansas City, Kan., has launched a new life as a 111-unit apartment building with half the units reserved for people 55 and older.
The $16.2 million renovation of the former St. Margaret’s Hospital at 759 Vermont Ave. was done by Foutch Bros. The firm also recently renovated the old Horace Mann Elementary School in Kansas City, Kan., into 30 market-rate lofts.
The new development is being called City View at St. Margaret’s, and the apartments are expected to rent for $800 to $1,500, depending on the size, said David Jones, an official with Foutch Bros. The developers expect a strong demand for the units, with some leases already signed.
“One thing that gave us confidence is the Horace Mann building opened in September and already is full,” Jones said.
The six-story former hospital building was completed in 1954 on the site of the original St. Margaret’s Hospital, which opened in 1886. The 116,000-square-foot building had been vacant since 2001.
Amenities in the apartment project include a rooftop garden that offers what’s described as a stunning view of the downtown Kansas City skyline. The building is scheduled to officially open for tenants on Jan. 1.
