Tallgrass Creek is planning a four-story addition with 87 one- and two-bedroom apartments to accommodate the demand from seniors interested in the retirement community at 138th Street and Metcalf Avenue.
With the existing 226 apartments fully occupied and 160 people on the waiting list, Peter Crane, executive director of Tallgrass, said the new $13 million addition is expected to accommodate another 140 residents when it’s completed next year.
“We are 100 percent full and have sustained that for the past couple of months,” he said.
The retirement community opened in 2007 and currently has 226 apartments with 315 residents. Next month, a $20 million residential facility offering skilled nursing, assisted living and memory care services will add another 104 apartments.
When fully completed, the addition of the new skilled nursing facility, called Blue Sage Pointe, and the new apartment building will bring the total number of people living at Tallgrass Creek to 600 residents.
Crane also said 60 jobs will be created with the openings of the two projects, most of them at Blue Sage Pointe.
Tallgrass is operated by Erickson Living of Baltimore. The 65-acre campus was designed to accommodate up to 1,500 units.
