AMC Town Center theaters get a seven-figure face-lift

Movie theaters are facing increased competition for consumers’ entertainment dollars, but a seven-figure renovation of the 18-year-old AMC Town Center 20 in Leawood is designed to get consumers off the couch and into the theaters by “elevating the experience.”

SweetFrog frozen yogurt franchise opening first area shop in KCK

SweetFrog plans a spring opening in the Legends Outlets Kansas City. Customers will get to make their own soft-serve creation, choosing from 21 different flavors each day - from a total of 50 different flavors - and more than 60 toppings. It also will offer nonfat, low-fat, sugar free and sorbet options.

Area food establishments cited for health code violations for April 14

Area restaurants and a tortilla manufacturer cited for 7 or more priority and critical violations: El Taquito, China Buffet, Hayes Hamburger & Chili, La Carreta, Autentico California Taco Shop, Celebrity’s Cheese Steaks, Burgers & More, McDonald’s, and Kaiyo Restaurant. Most violations are corrected at the time of the inspection.

Jose Pepper’s to open in Briarcliff Village

Jose Pepper’s Border Grill & Cantina will open in the former site of The Café at Briarcliff Village. The local restaurant chain is remodeling the building at 4125 N. Mulberry Drive in the Northland shopping center. The company did not say when the restaurant would open.

Independence Center adds new retailers, restaurants

Tilly’s, an “action sports” retailer, is scheduled to open in the center in May. Footlocker has expanded, adding a House of Hoops by Footlocker store next door. Two new restaurants, Teriyaki Grill and Fenway’s Steakburger, also recently opened in the center’s food court.

Cascone’s Grill North now open at 6427 N. Cosby

Frank Cascone, whose family has owned and operated a River Market restaurant since the mid-1950s, is the owner and operator of the new restaurant in the Picture Hills Shopping Center at 6427 N. Cosby. Marty’s Bar-B-Q had previously operated in the space.

Guadalajara Cafe to open in south Overland Park

Guadalajara Cafe, formerly at 1144 W. 103rd St., will reopen as Guadalajara at 14861 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park (in the former Frida’s Contemporary Mexican Cuisine space), by mid-June. The restaurant originally opened in the mid-1990s. There also is a Guadalajara Cafe under different ownership in Lee’s Summit.

New American cuisine comes to Platte City at Chaz 325

Charles Shurn puffs up like a proud father when he talks about his New American cuisine menu, especially his steaks and the twists he puts on traditional items like a balsamic reduction sauce for some steaks and a southwestern-style tenderloin. Menu items also include a blackened bleu burger, chicken Madeira, southern fried catfish filet, baked ziti, panini turkey melt, and a BLT wedge salad.
