Plowboys Barbeque is bringing its high-quality barbecue to some under-served areas of the city.
First the owners — Todd Johns and Todd Johnson — opened a freestanding fast-casual Blue Springs restaurant with drive-through in September 2013.
Now they have added a downtown Kansas City location, taking a corner spot in the Town Pavilion at 1111 Main St. It’s a spot they call their “little place in the big city.”
“We are filling a gap in the metro where people are coming to downtown from outside of our city, and there is nothing available for them in walking distance, and now there is,” Johns said. “There’s a big tourism gap, as well as the people working downtown every day. We are bringing barbecue to the people.”

The downtown Plowboys is mostly going for the business lunch crowd. It offers cafeteria-style ordering at the counter for dine-in or carry-out. The dining room seats 54 people and has large windows looking out to the traffic on Main Street and Petticoat Lane.
Business has been so brisk since the restaurant opened Thursday that both registers are needed for taking orders from walk-ins. But soon the restaurant plans to use one of those registers for pre-orders. It also will have a smartphone app so customers can order and pay in advance.
Blair Cragg, assistant manager of the Blue Springs location since it opened in 2013, is manager of the new location. It features Plowboys’ favorites such as their championship pulled pork and slow smoked brisket, as well as its BBQ Nachos (making up 15 percent of daily orders). Sides include pit beans, green beans, vinegar or creamy slaw, and cheesy potatoes.
Ribs are on the menu Tuesdays and Thursdays, with burnt ends served Wednesdays and Fridays.
It also will offer box lunches, especially popular for office catering, and meat by the pound (pork, turkey, sausage, ham, brisket and burnt ends).
Johns and Randy Hinck founded Plowboys in 2001 as a barbecue competition team, and the team has won many awards. In 2007, Johns began producing and distributing Plowboys rubs and sauces, which he said are now sold at more than 600 retailers in the U.S., England, the Netherlands and Canada.
Plowboys also was featured on Travel Channel’s BBQ Crawl in fall 2014.
The Town Pavilion had talked to several tenants about the first floor spot before signing Plowboys.
“Great barbecue is needed downtown,” said Joni Cross, property manager for the Town Pavilion.
