Hard Core Customs, a full-service custom motorcycle shop, has operated in Gladstone for nearly a dozen years.
Its customers often wanted to grab a bite while waiting for a service like an oil change, but there wasn’t a restaurant within walking distance.
So now owners Kevin and Kathy Burns are providing one.
On Oct. 30 they opened the 2,600-square-foot Hard Core Cafe at 320 N.E. 72nd St. By early next year they will relocate their shop, currently at 212 N.E. 72nd St., to a space at 300 N.E. 72nd St., next to the cafe.
The cafe — with walls of bright red and shiny diamond plate — features a pool table, Harley-Davidson pinball machine and dart boards. There’s also the Burn Pit, a separate smoking area.
But it is designed to draw more than just Hard Core Customs customers.
“We want the girls at City Hall to come down and feel as comfortable as a big fat biker,” said Kevin Burns.
The menu includes pizzas such as the Hard Core Combo, with pepperoni, hamburger, sausage, Italian sausage, green pepper, onion, mushrooms and black olives, as well as subs, French dip sandwiches, Buffalo chicken or breaded chicken salads, and more.
As for its sister business, Hard Core Customs, it does everything from oil changes to complete custom builds. It also has a retail area selling apparel and motorcycle accessories and parts.
Sultan’s Bakery opens on 39th
Syrian Kurd Shero Alloush said his family — big lovers of sweets — had always planned to open a bakery one day. He came to the United States for college 13 years ago and now works in information technology. But when troubles plagued his homeland he started getting his family out — mother, sister, and most of his cousin’s family.
He brought them to Kansas City and it was then that they decided to follow their passion, opening the new Sultan’s Bakery at 1708 W. 39th St., Suite B, in mid-October.
“I always wanted to get my portion of the American dream,” Alloush said.
His cousin, Ali Mahou, is a trained baker so he can be found in Sultan’s most days making Middle Eastern baked goods and delicacies using fresh ingredients with no preservatives. Other family members fill in as needed.
Menu items include pistachio baklava, almond fingers, Warbat (crunchy layers of phyllo dough wrapped around sweet cheese, sprinkled pistachio and drizzled with rose water), sesame cookies and Turkish coffee. Specials include Mamoul (shortbread pastries filled with dates).
▪ Specialty grocery store chain Sprouts Farmers Market plans a 7 a.m. Jan. 21 opening for its new store at 8383 Booth Ave. The 28,000-square-foot store would be the Arizona-based company’s first Sprouts in Missouri and the third in the metro area. It also has locations in Lenexa and Overland Park.
Another Northland Sprouts is scheduled to open later this year in The Village at Burlington Creek, 6061 N.W. 64th St., but the company didn’t provide an opening date.
