Overland Park’s Corbin Park is getting two more restaurants.
Chris and Tara Ruff, owners of the Firehouse Subs in Olathe Station, 15137 W. 119th St., Olathe, plan to open one of the restaurants at 13713 Metcalf Ave., on June 21. The space formerly housed Bruegger’s Bagels.
Chris Ruff was in the military in Afghanistan U.S. Army Reserves, aviation branch, when the couple opened their Olathe Station location in March 2011.
“He’ll be here for this one,” said Tara Ruff.
Firehouse Subs specializes in hot and cold sandwiches — corned beef brisket, grilled chicken, chicken salad, veggie, Virginia honey ham and more. There are currently nine area Firehouse Subs in Blue Springs, Kansas City, Liberty, Overland Park and Shawnee, along with one in Lawrence.
The other restaurant tenant? It’s Spin Neapolitan Pizza.
The company wouldn’t confirm its Corbin Park location in December, when it was still in negotiations. But now a deal has been completed for a 3,800-square-foot restaurant at 6510 W. 135th St. A spring 2015 opening is scheduled. The restaurant, which will be the company’s seventh in the area, will have an outdoor patio and an entrance that will face new mega sports store Scheels (which is scheduling a June 2015 opening) and an outdoor patio.Villa Capri relocating
Overland Park’s Villa Capri Restaurant is relocating after 53 years at 81st Street and Metcalf Avenue.
Founder Tony Scudiero operated the restaurant until 2012. Then, after some health problems, he turned it over to his son Steve Scudiero.
Steve Scudiero had worked at Villa Capri off and on for 40 years. He plans to close the original location at 8126 Floyd St. at the end of the month and is in final negotiations to reopen the restaurant at 10412 Mastin St. by early July.
“I’ve seen a decline in the Metcalf corridor traffic between 75th and 91st streets. There are a lot of car lots and empty lots,” he said.
Villa Capri is known for its classic Italian dishes — spaghetti and meatballs, ravioli, lasagna, manicotti, chicken parmigiana, and pizza.
When Villa Capri opens in the new location it also will have a new name, Steve’s Villa Capri.Olathe’s Dodge City Distillery has shut down
WXYZ Restaurant Group opened the distillery-restaurant in mid-2011 in Olathe Pointe, 11935 S. Blackbob Road. It was known for its hand-crafted cocktails and wood-fired steaks.
Joe Effertz Jr. was an original partner, but he said he sold his interest in the operation 18 months ago. The other owners couldn’t be reached for comment.
A sign on the door says: “We would like to thank Olathe and Kansas City for making us feel welcome. We regret to inform everyone that we will be moving back to Dodge City. We apologize for any inconveniences and again want to thank everyone.”
On the Border Mexican Grill Cantina had originally operated in the spot. But Dodge City Distillery remodeled it to make it to give it a distinct old Dodge City feel.Oklahoma Joe’s event space
Olathe’s Oklahoma Joe’s Bar-B-Que plans to open a new private event space.
The restaurant, at 11950 S. Strang Line Road, has taken a 4,000-square-foot space next door and plans to open the event space there in late summer. It will seat around 80 people for business meetings, wedding receptions, retirement parties and other events. The space also will be divided up for smaller groups.
Oklahoma Joe’s is developing a menu specifically for event space customers.
