Jean Rhodes long joked that she would open a hot dog cart when she retired.

Now she has a hot dog

Kansas City Hotdog Emporium Coffee Shop is having its grand opening today at 324 E. 11th St., Suite 102, in the 28-story Oak Tower office building.

Rhodes was a respiratory therapist at North Kansas City Hospital for more than 40 years before retiring in October 2013.

“I needed something to do, something fun. Hotdogs are fun food and cheap to fix. It just snowballed from there,” she said.

The menu includes sandwiches like the pot roast, the pulled pork, the “Pilgrim” (fresh cut roasted turkey smothered in gravy and topped with cranberry chutney and arugula), egg salad, tuna salad, and Sloppy Joes, along with veggie dogs, Polish sausage, all beef hot dogs and a variety of sides from Jello salad to cucumbers and onions. It also sells breakfast items and desserts.

Hours are 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
