Papa John’s Pizza is planning a Dec. 29 opening in the East Crossroads district.
The pizza chain is taking a space at 1911 McGee St., near Bad Seed farmers’ market and Dermadoctor Inc.
Papa John’s Pizza, Louisville, Ky., is one of the country’s largest pizza restaurant chains with annual sales of $2.6 billion, behind Pizza Hut ($11.2 billion) and Domino’s Pizza ($6.9 billion) , according to Pizza Today magazine.
The chain got its start in 1983, when founder John Schnatter, 22, picked up his business degree from Ball State University, and went home to Indiana. He decided he could make a better commercial pizza than was on the market at that time. So he knocked down the broom closet in his father's tavern, installed an oven and began making and delivering pizza out of the back of the bar.
He focused on fresh dough and superior-quality ingredients. The menu now includes build-your-own pizzas and specialty pizzas like spinach alfredo and barbecue chicken bacon, along with chicken poppers, wings and chocolate chip cookies.
Papa John’s became a public company in mid-1993 and now has more than 3,800 restaurants worldwide.
