Matt Baldwin — one of GQ magazine’s four best new menswear designers in the country — is having a milestone month.

•  On Friday he opened his new Baldwin KC store on the Country Club Plaza, 340 W. 47th St., and he plans to open locations in other markets.

Baldwin KC is stocked with Baldwin’s denim and collections for men and women, including shirts, knitwear, fleece, hats, shoes and accessories. Baldwin also sells his line wholesale to about 70 specialty stores and upscale department stores such as Barneys New York, Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom.

Some of the items also are sold at Baldwin KC’s sister stores, Standard Style on the Plaza and in Leawood, and Baldwin Men’s Shop in Leawood.

•  Today, the Gap will introduce its second exclusive collection, this one designed by Baldwin and the other of GQ’s best new menswear designers. Prices will start at $30 and range up to $348. The Gap said Baldwin brings “timeless functionality with a clean architectural aesthetic for designs that are minimal, modern and decidedly masculine.”

Baldwin will be at a Gap store in New York’s Upper East Side serving as a salesman for the first few hours of the launch. The lines are expected to sell out in 48 hours.

GQ’s Best New Menswear Designers in America project was established in 2007 to bring more attention to up-and-coming American menswear designers. The designers also take part in a mentoring program led by GQ and the Gap.

Candy retailer coming to the Plaza

The Country Club Plaza is about to get sweeter.

A South Florida candy retailer called It’sugar plans a mid-October opening in a 1,117-square-foot space at 445 W. 47th St.

The shops specialize in candy — lollipops, chocolates, gummy bears, mints and more. They also sell candy-inspired fashion apparel, including themed T-shirts — Hello Kitty, Marilyn Monroe, and Marvel Super Heroes — along with accessories and novelty gifts. Items also include giant candy bars like a one-pound package of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, chocolate chip flavored lip balm, and scented glitter nail polish.

Jeff Rubin founded the company in 2006. There are about 50 stores and 20 store-within-a-store operations in such cities as Las Vegas, Miami and New York.
