Pie Five Pizza Co. promises made-to-order individual pizzas in five minutes.
You’ll be able to put them to the test when the first area operation opens at 11 a.m. Monday at 13366 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.
Dave Goebel, former president and chief executive officer of Applebee's, and two of his triplet sons, Kerry and Kevin Goebel, have signed a 10-unit franchise agreement with the Texas-based company.
Although their agreement is for 10 units in a market stretching into Manhattan, Kan., the Goebels could eventually open as many as a dozen Pie Five restaurants just in the Kansas City area. They already are in negotiations for three more locations, two in Johnson County and one on the Missouri side.
Pie Five customers will be able to select from a variety of choices in crust, sauce, cheese, greens, meats and vegetables. Pie Five also has several 9-inch specialty pizzas, including chicken Carbonara, barbecue pulled pork, vegetarian and the Athenian, and it serves salads.
The Pie Five name comes from the five minutes it should take from the time a customer places the order until they pay and pick up their pizza. The pizza takes only 2 1/2 minutes to bake.
The first Pie Five opened in Fort Worth in 2011, combining handmade pizzas with fresh ingredients and the latest high-speed baking techniques. In 2012 it was named a “hot concept” of the year by Nation's Restaurant News.Debbie Gold rolls out full menu
Debbie Gold left her executive chef position at The American Restaurant to become culinary partner in the new Red Door Grill at 11851 Roe Ave., Leawood.
But she had just a month before the restaurant opened in mid-May, then had to take off the last two weeks of May to keep a commitment as a guest celebrity chef on a Mediterranean cruise.
So Gold perfected a short menu for the May 13 opening — specialty hamburgers, sandwiches, flatbreads and a few other items. When she returned in June she worked on the rest of the menu and is now rolling out “wood-fired supper entrees” and new sides from her “scratch” kitchen, including rotisserie pork chops with fire roasted polenta, Schlafly apple chutney and asparagus, and miso glazed salmon with baby bok choy, shiitake mushrooms, buckwheat noodles and pickled mustard seed.
“People know me for creative ingredients and pairings,” she said. “But this restaurant is about simple flavors, simple foods. I want to take an eggplant and have people say ‘that’s the best eggplant I have ever had.’ ”Wanted: Anchor tenant
Ward Parkway Center has a new sign advertising for an anchor tenant and other retailers.
The former Dillard’s building was demolished and new parking lots are in place to support an anchor. It would have to be 60,000-square-feet or less to fit into the spot on the south side of the center at 8600 Ward Parkway.
“We are actively trying to lease the current center and find our new tenant for the south end. We are keeping our options open,” said Lori Cogan, general manager.
Meanwhile, Ulta Beauty is looking at a late September, early October opening on the Ward Parkway side. Halloween City plans to open a seasonal store by mid-September on the State Line side by Target. Later this month, the center will start converting several vacant retail spaces across from Starbucks into one large space for prospective new tenants in 2014.
