Former Chiefs player Eddie Kennison is expanding his City Market offerings.
Kennison opened Cellar & Loft wine shop, at 525 Walnut St., nearly three years ago with Bill and Maggie Dane. Now the partners have taken over the spot next door at 527 Walnut for a new pizza operation set to open in about 60 days.
Not sure if the pizza shop’s name — Slap Yo Momma — will get by the political correct police but Kennison says it is a term of endearment.
“Food so good you want to ‘slap yo momma.’ After my mom cooks she holds up her chin like we are going to slap her because she knows her food is good,” Kennison said.
The urban dictionary has this to say about the saying: “When you try some new food that tastes so delicious it makes you wonder ‘why can't my mom cook this well?’ This thought makes you so angry that you feel like slapping your mom for feeding you mediocre food. Of course, this is usually meant as a joke or figure of speech. Most people love their mothers and would never do such a thing.”
The City Market’s new Slap Yo Momma will sell gourmet pizzas — from vegetarian to an all-meat pizza, and seasonal pizzas using fresh ingredients from the Farmers’ Market — along with warm bread with dipping oils, and meat and cheese trays.
The space formerly housed the Tamale Wizard and the Original Antonio’s Pizzeria & Walnut Deli.
