Guy’s Snacks Corp. has plenty of snack products — but enough to stock a whole store?
So its new Guy’s Snacks shop in Overland Park carries all the company’s favorites along with some other local and regional food products.
Expect to see Guy’s potato chips — original plain, original wavy, green onion, barbecue, sweet mesquite barbecue ridges, sour cream and onion, original plain ridges, cheddar and sour cream ridges, jalapeno and no-salt classic — along with tortilla chips, caramel corn, Cheez Puffs, Tasty Mix, Tortz Nacho Cheese chips, pretzel sticks and other snacks.
But the new shop — on the north side of Windmill Square at 7365 W. 97th St. — also carries some other products under the new KCLocal group. KCLocal is a band of local and regional manufacturers behind such products as Real Man Bean Dip, Valomilk candy cups, and products from Uncle Jack’s Taste of the Ozarks, including its barbecue sauces, rubs and whole grain mustard.
But Guy’s snacks are the draw.
“Everyone who comes in has a story,” said Janine Joslin, chief executive officer of Guy’s Snacks Corp. “They grew up with Guy’s. And someone came in the other day who worked at the Liberty plant and bought seven bags of chips, Tasty Mix and pretzels.”
The barbecue chips are the company’s top seller. But if it doesn’t get the seasonings exactly right in one of its runs, Guy’s aficionados are quick to let them know, she said.
Founder Guy Caldwell started roasting peanuts and then selling them under Guy’s Nut and Candy Co. in Kansas City in 1938. He later added potato chips to his line, cooking them in his own blend of oil and seasonings. The company became known for its “Don’t Forget the Guy’s” ad campaigns. His family owned Guy’s until the 1980s. It has since been under several owners.
Joslin, who became a co-owner of the company in late 2006, has the company’s offices in the back of the retail space. The Guy’s products are made in Fulton, Mo.

The Village at Shoal Creek has signed its first tenant.
Cheddar’s plans a late 2013 or early 2014 opening in the center at Missouri 152 and North Booth Avenue, across from Shoal Creek Golf Course. Cheddar’s will build an 8,000-square-foot freestanding restaurant.
The 125,000-square-foot Village at Shoal Creek also is to have a specialty grocery store. Construction is to start in mid-2014, with a late 2014 or early 2015 opening.
