Which Wich Superior Sandwiches — known for its specialty and customizable sandwiches — is now open in Westport.
The chain has a cult following and rightly so. But for first-timers, here’s a tutorial:
As you enter you’ll see 10 bins, each filled with sandwich bags for a specific sandwich — from the Wicked to seafood to breakfast sandwiches. Pull a bag for the sandwich you want to order, mark the type of bread, toasted or not, size and any toppings or extras. Then hand it to one of the kitchen crew, pay for the order, and soon you’ll have your sandwich.
So you don’t have to wait in line while someone else is trying to decide whether they want caramelized onions or crispy strings, or cheddar or Cheez Whiz. Or if you want to be that person that really fine-tunes his selection you don’t have to fret about holding up the line.
“So basically you can customize it without talking to someone,” said John Hanna, who is the area franchisee with his wife, Beth Hanna.
The combinations are endless. For my first purchase I finally settled on the “Ham Pork” category, which had five choices: ham, a pork tenderloin, the Hula (ham and pineapple), the Cuban (ham, pork and pickle), and the Bac-Hammon (bacon and ham). I had the basic ham, toasted, on white, with Cheddar cheese, mayo, and crispy strings.
Among the other choices were spicy ranch dressing, horseradish, honey, pesto spread, sauerkraut, black olives, banana peppers, garlic and crushed red pepper.
Customers also can select one of the specialty sandwiches, such as the Wicked, stocked with turkey, ham, roast beef, pepperoni, bacon and three cheeses; or the turkey, which can be a nod to Thanksgiving dinner when stuffing and cranberry sauce are the topping selections.
Other choices include the huevos rancheros breakfast sandwich, French dip, grinders and gyros, vegetarian sandwiches from caprese to black bean patty, shrimp po’ boys and teriyaki chicken. The menu includes salads (any Wich on a bed of iceberg lettuce or spinach), the new Lettucewich (any Wich wrapped in lettuce), hand-dipped shakes and freshly baked cookies.
The sandwich shop is at 554 Westport Road, next to Freebirds World Burrito. In the next year, the Hannas said they might open an additional location in Lawrence or Olathe.Ward Parkway to add cosmetics store chain
