Marcus Crawford had worked with his mother, Pamela Lawrence, at a restaurant in south Kansas City. After she passed away three years ago, he decided to go out on his own.
He took over Mad Jack's on Troost after its decade-long run, and gave the place a new name and menu.
"I look at this as her store. I treat it like she would — the same attitude, personality, customer service," he said. "A lot of people looked up to her, respected her and loved her. I saw people cry because she isn't there."
Crawford's new Mac's Fish & More, at 6200 Troost Ave., serves a variety of fish including basa, catfish, tilapia, cod and snapper, as well as boiled shrimp, hot wings, hamburgers and sandwiches such as a chicken philly.
Sides include okra, onion rings, fried mushrooms, corn nuggets, spaghetti, green beans, fried pickles, extra extra hot pickles, hush puppies and cornbread. And for dessert, a choice of peach cobbler, sweet potato pie, chocolate cake or lemon cake.
It also offers daily specials including Monday's 1/2-pound of basa, a cold salad (potato salad, slaw or mac-and-cheese) and a drink for $6.69.
