Nadine Smith, a native of South Africa, said she named her shop after the Afrikaan word for chocolate and opened the new storefront over the weekend on the lower level by Nordstrom.
Smith was a trauma nurse in California before going to culinary school in San Diego. She had a long-term relationship with a St. Joseph woman and moved here in 2012. She often traveled to other cities to cater events.
Her Sjokolade Bar offers her chocolates, as well as cakes, pies and pastries including eclairs, cinnamon rolls, petit fours, croissants, crepes, ice cream sundaes, banana splits, bread pudding, French press coffee, hot chocolate and more. She plans to soon offer alcoholic drinks including chocolate martinis.
Smith also will soon hold events including book clubs and the shop can be booked for private events.
The space where Smith had set up her pop-up is extending its stay at the Overland Park mall at 95th Street and Quivira Road. The "cardboard box inspired" Boutique in a Box, set up during the holidays, features several vendors at at time. Smith was there in February and March.
