IHG’s Hotel Indigo is a national brand, but each one is localized to its market.
So its new downtown location, at 101 W. 11th St., has a first floor corner restaurant named after a 1930s downtown Kansas City singer of note, and it offers pastries by Bloom Baking Co. in the City Market.
The bartenders have daily specials using products by local companies such as Tom’s Town Distilling Co., and the hotel has several murals with Kansas City transportation themes and 1929 Kansas City postcards turned into wallpaper.
The building had been mostly vacant since 1997 and went dark in 2007, even earning a “dangerous building” designation.
Then Brookfield Hotel Investment LLC of Madison, Wis., converted the historic 12-story office tower into the new mixed-use operation. It now houses the 118-room boutique Hotel Indigo.
It has 27 apartments on the top three floors under the name Fairfax Lofts. Before it was the Brookfield building it was known as the Fairfax building, according to Missouri Valley Special Collections. Tenants can order room service and have their rooms cleaned just as if they were staying at the hotel.
Dott Boss Cocktails & Coffee House is on the corner of the first floor.
Breakfast includes the Tuscan Biscuit Sandwich (an herbed biscuit filled with sauteed spinach, mushrooms, prosciutto ham, Parmesan cheese and scrambled eggs), Eggs Benedict, wraps and the Asian Bowl (rice wine candied yams covered with a poached egg, steamed broccolini, ginger carrots, spring onions, toasted almonds and thinly sliced pork char siu bacon).
Breakfast drinks include peach Bellinis, white wine sangria, Irish coffee and Bloody Marys.
Lunch includes the Asian Blend salad with a vegetable egg roll (Romaine, red cabbage and Napa cabbage tossed in house-made roasted peanut dressing with edamame, Mandarin oranges, fried wontons, wasabi peas and ginger carrots), Curry on Croissant (a croissant filled with a blend of Indian spices and a creamy roast chicken salad), and the Wyandotte Burger. Sides include Parmesan cheese and black pepper fries with a choice of three sauces: sriracha mayo, red curry or smoked tomato ketchup.
At night it has small plates such as seafood mac-and-cheese, wings, chicken spiedini, and Stratford Bay Green Mussels with wine and saffron. Large plates include beef short ribs, pork Wellington, Chilean sea bass and vegetable strata.
Another Hotel Indigo under different owners is planned for 2020 Grand Blvd. and it will be localized to reflect the Crossroads.
