Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City reveals illegal credit card use

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City has fired a customer service representative who was found to have bought things using the credit card numbers of two Blue KC customers.

Blue KC chief of staff Wayne Powell said the violation never compromised the insurer’s computer systems or payments and never involved any customer health or policy information.

“It was old-fashioned bad integrity,” Powell said. “It’s a situation where one bad apple abused the situation.”

The case was turned over to Kansas City police, Powell said.

The insurer identified all customers who had given any credit card or bank information to the customer representative over the phone. All were offered credit monitoring and restoration services through AllClear ID. Only two reported unauthorized activity.

Powell credited the two customers for telling the company in February when they discovered unauthorized activity on their charge cards. Blue KC customers with questions about the incident may call
