Shares in Sprint Nextel fell for the second consecutive day Tuesday, following downgrades by two Wall Street analysts.
The stock, which fell 23 cents on Monday, lost another 7 cents on Tuesday. It closed down 1.2 percent on the day to $5.62.
Other regional stocks that lost ground Tuesday included Cerner, down 1.8 percent; H Block, down 0.7 percent, and Ferrellgas, down 1.1 percent.
Gainers included Kansas City Southern, Waddell Reed, O’Reilly Automotive, and Garmin.
On Wall Street, stocks edged higher after a rally in retail stocks offset concerns about flaring tensions in Washington over increasing the country’s borrowing limit.
The Dow Jones industrial average ended the day up 27.57 points at 13,534.89. The Dow moved higher in the late afternoon after being down as much as 62 points in the early going.
The Standard and Poor’s 500 rose 1.66 points to 1,472.34, a five-year high. The Nasdaq composite index, dragged down by a fall in Apple, fell 6.72 points to 3,110.78. The BATS 1000 rose 37.67 points, or 0.23 percent, to close at 16,627.37.
Retail stocks moved higher throughout the day, boosted by a report that showed retail sales increased in December, helping the major indexes reverse early losses.
Consumers bought more autos, furniture and clothing, despite worries about potential tax increases, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. Sales rose 0.5 percent in December from November, slightly better than November’s 0.4 percent increase and the best showing since September.Regional stocks
Capitol Federal Financial rose 2 cents, or 0.17%, to close at $11.88.
Cerner Corp. fell $1.46, or 1.78%, to close at $80.70.
Commerce Bancshares Inc. fell 49 cents, or 1.32%, to close at $36.50.
Compass Minerals rose 11 cents, or 0.15%, to close at $72.81.
DST Systems Inc. rose 19 cents, or 0.30%, to close at $63.16.
Ferrellgas Partners L.P. fell 21 cents, or 1.14%, to close at $18.17.
Garmin Ltd. rose 12 cents, or 0.30%, to close at $40.03.
Great Plains Energy rose 7 cents, or 0.34%, to close at $20.86.
H Block Inc. fell 13 cents, or 0.67%, to close at $19.28.
Inergy L.P. rose 1 cents, or 0.05%, to close at $20.20.
Kansas City Life Insurance Co. rose 2 cents, or 0.05%, to close at $37.39.
Kansas City Southern rose $1.21, or 1.41%, to close at $86.90.
Layne Christensen Co. rose 12 cents, or 0.51%, to close at $23.46.
O’Reilly Automotive Inc. rose $1.17, or 1.32%, to close at $89.72.
Sprint Nextel Corp. fell 7 cents, or 1.23%, to close at $5.62.
UMB Financial Corp. rose 18 cents, or 0.40%, to close at $45.40.
Waddell Reed Financial Corp. rose 50 cents, or 1.33%, to close at $38.10.
YRC Worldwide Inc. rose 6 cents, or 0.91%, to close at $6.69.
