Brian Bannister gave up no runs and two hits over eight innings, giving the Royals a 4-0 victory Sunday over the Orioles in front of a Mother’s Day crowd of 18,635 at Kauffman Stadium.
Bannister’s gem stopped his personal four-game losing streak, and more important, the Royals’ string of three straight losses. It was also the team’s first win in 13 games against the Orioles.
Mark Teahen (single), Jose Guillen (double) and Alex Gordon (bases-loaded ground-out) had the Royals’ RBIs. Guillen went two for four, lifting his average above the Mendoza line for the first time all season. He’s now hitting .207.
Bannister threw first-pitch strikes to 21 of 28 batters, and faced just four more than the minimum in shutting down an Orioles offense that produced 13 runs in the previous two games. He is now 4-4 and lowered his ERA from 4.46 to 3.75. He threw 110 pitches, including 75 strikes.
He allowed just six base runners: in order, a walk, single, walk, catcher’s interference, dropped pop-up and bloop single.
