KINGMAN, Kan. | The Kingman police chief has been charged with felony criminal threat and misdemeanor counts of criminal restraint and batter in connection with an April 26 altercation with his girlfriend.
Prosecutors announced the charges Thursday during a brief court appearance by Police Chief John Braden. He is free on $10,000 bond.
City Manager Frank Soukup said he likely will decide next week whether to keep Braden on paid administrative leave or take other action.
Police arrested Braden early April 26 after responding to a disturbance call at his Kingman home. He is accused of battering his longtime girlfriend, and at one point she managed to get his pistol and fire a shot, officials said. Nobody was injured.
Still, he said Kingman residents shouldn’t lose their confidence in the police department.
“As far as, does it tarnish the reputation — I don’t think so,” Soukup said.
He said townspeople see the situation as an isolated incident that doesn’t reflect on the police department.
“The fact that the two city officers that responded to the original incident did their duty and did not turn away from it — I think some of those things are reassuring to the community,” Soukup said.
