Gunfire greets burglar; another crime may be related

Overland Park police are investigating a business burglary where an employee fired shots at a suspect. The suspect, who may have been hit, was able to get away.

The incident occurred at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday at Ratliff Guttering Company in the 5000 block of Mackey Street.

Police said a company employee had been sleeping in an apartment inside the business when he heard a loud crash in the garage area. The employee grabbed a 12-gauge shotgun and went to investigate.

The garage door was partly open, and the employee saw a man inside, near a company truck. He then fired a shot and heard the man yell. The intruder ran towards the garage door and the employee fired again.

Police found blood on the garage floor but could not find the intruder. They alerted hospitals and other area law enforcement agencies.

Later this morning police learned that someone also broke into nine vehicles parked at another business in the same block, KC Sign Express. Overland Park police spokesman Jim Weaver said it’s possible the same person committed both crimes. He said investigators think the employee scared the intruder away from the guttering company before anything was stolen, but have not tallied losses from KC Sign Express burglaries. They believe the burglar was looking for tools and scrap metal.

Anyone with information should call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
