Clay County introduces new tips hotline

Clay County authorities on Thursday unveiled a new weapon in their effort to fight crime.

The WeTip hotline is now available and allows people to anonymously report crimes and fraudulent activities.

To report crime or fraudulent activity in Clay County, call 1-800-78-CRIME (782-7463) or 1-800-US-FRAUD (873-7283).

The phone line is made possible through the Mid-America Regional Council Insurance Trust. The program offers rewards for information leading to arrests and convictions. Callers can receive up to $1,000 if their information leads to an arrest and conviction, said Eastern Clay County Commissioner Craig Porter.

Liberty Deputy Chief Jim Simpson said the WeTip hotline also can be used by high school students in conjunction with school resource officers to report vandalism and other illegal activities.

County Administrator Alexa Barton said the program is available at no cost to the county. Barton said the program will coordinate with similar hotlines such as the TIPS hotline operated by the Kansas City Metropolitan Crime Commission.
