A University of Kansas graduate student is in critical condition at a Lawrence hospital after he ingested a toxic chemical, according to an alert put out by the university.
The student is believed to have accidentally ingested sodium azide while working on the Fifth Floor of Malott Hall late Wednesday.
The student became ill after leaving the building. Malot Hall was temporary evacuated as a precaution, but the university’s environmental health and safety office determined the lab and building safe to enter, according to the alert.
The chemical is a common preservative used in laboratories. Ingesting it can lead to, among other things, abnormal breathing, low blood pressure, convulsions, brain damage and death.
The university plans a press conference for later today.
