Olathe residents will be receiving a blue, 65-gallon recycling cart over the next several weeks.
City employees began delivering the carts today. Curbside recycling using the new carts will begin Jan. 4 with collection every other week.
The carts cost the city about $1.5 million, and homeowners not on the recycling program already will pay an extra $2.50 a month for the service on their city services bill.
Among the items to be recycled in the new bins are catalogs, junk mail, magazines and newspapers, cardboard boxes, plastic bottles and jars, aluminum cans and tin food cans.
City officials hope the new recycling effort will reduce the amount of waste they have to send to a landfill, which will save the city money.
