Dock owners on Missouri lakes will be required to post the closest emergency address for their dock under a new state law that takes effect on Jan. 1.
The new law hopes to increase response times when there is an emergency on the water. The addresses will also help boaters who are lost or have disabled boats, according to the Missouri Water Patrol.
The signs are suggested to be posted so that it is visible when looking at the dock from the water. The Water Patrol recommends a minimum of three inch letters be used when posting addresses on docks and using a color that contrasts with the backing. Reflective paint or material is preferred.
The posted address is suggested to include the street number and street name and the Zip Code, or 911 address and Zip Code. The dock permit number can be posted alongside the emergency address.
Those unsure of the closet emergency or 911 address for their dock can contact local emergency services office or the sheriff’s department.
For more information regarding the new law, contact the Missouri Water Patrol at 573-751-3333.
