A Kansas City business was evacuated this afternoon after chemical fumes sickened six workers.
Firefighters and paramedics were called about 2 p.m. to Hair U Wear, 5900 Equitable Road, after the workers complained of headaches and nausea, fire Battalion Chief Joe Vitale said.
Fumes initially appeared to be coming from the furnace, Vitale said, but hazardous materials crews traced them to chemical hair products that had been poured down a sink next to the furnace, which then circulated the fumes through air ducts.
The six sick workers needed fresh air but weren’t taken to a hospital, Vitale said. About 20 other office workers temporarily were evacuated, plus several more workers from a warehouse in back, but none complained of symptoms.
