Appeals court throws out convictions in slayings of Raytown couple

More News

A Missouri Appeals Court panel today ordered a new trial for the convicted killer of an elderly Raytown couple.

The court ruled that Kellen C. McKinney should not have been tried for attempted escape from jail at the same time he was tried for the killings of Mildred and John Caylor.

The three-judge panel ruled that the law required that McKinney, 32, must be tried separately for attempted escape and for the killings.

The Caylors were beaten and their throats were cut in October 2004 inside the Bible store they had operated for decades on 63rd Street.

A Jackson County jury later convicted McKinney of first-degree murder, and he later was sentenced to life in prison.

Jackson County prosecutors were not available this morning for comment.
