Gunfight erupts outside KC tavern

More News

A man kicked out of a Kansas City tavern shot at a security guard and bouncer early Sunday, and the guard fired back.

Stray gunfire from the guard landed about three blocks away, near a patrol car and two police officers who were on an unrelated call.

Police later arrested a 26-year-old suspect, whom the guard identified. He was released from jail, pending further investigation.

The incident began about 2:40 a.m. at Gerry’s Silver Slipper, 4704 Independence Ave. A bouncer had removed the suspect and three others from the tavern. As they left in a car, the suspect leaned out the front passenger window and fired at the bouncer and guard.

A round tore through the bouncer’s pants but did not hit his skin. The guard fired back as the car sped away on Independence Avenue.

Two police officers at Independence and Kensington Avenue heard bullets striking the ground near their patrol car.

Earlier this year, the city’s Regulated Industries department suspended the liquor license of Gerry’s Silver Slipper for 66 days for multiple ordinance violations. The business served its suspension March 29 through June 3. Tavern officials also agreed to provide education, training and instruction to employees about city ordinances.

Violations included multiple thefts of customers’ and employees’ property in the operation and in the parking lot, a January fight that involved more than 20 people and resulted in three people stabbed multiple times, and the February killings of two people outside the business.
