Forty-seven Blue Valley seniors have been named National Merit semifinalists, matching the record number of semifinalists named in the district during the 2012-13 school year.
The Blue Valley high school students were included among the list of 16,000 semifinalists from across the nation announced Wednesday by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for its 61st annual scholarship program.
About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program by getting high scores on the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Other school districts and private schools in the area also have semifinalists vying for a share of the $32 million in scholarships to be offered next spring, including Olathe, 25; Shawnee Mission, 16; Shawnee, 2; Lee’s Summit, 6; Blue Springs, 4; and Liberty, 3; Rockhurst High School, 13; and Pembroke Hill, 13.
To be considered for one of the 7,400 merit scholarships, the semifinalists must fulfill several requirements and advance to the finalist round of competition.
