In days of yore, you mightbefriend
A pal on whom you may depend.
But now the“be”
will not append
And thus the verb is merelyfriend.
I’ll hardly claim — purport — pretend —
To understand or grasp this trend
Of taking rules, which then suspend
Restrictions on how words may blend.
Is this perhaps what folks intend?
’Tis silly, so much time to spend
On trifles! Yet I will extend
One courtesy to recommend:
That poems still reach a rhyming end.| Don Munday
