Lou Brock arrived to his question and answer session at FanFest about 10 minutes late but those who packed and even spilled outside the All-Star Clubhouse thought it was worth the wait as they greeted the former Cardinals base-stealing extraordinaire with a mixture of cheers and "Lou!"
Brock covered the essential topics like the art of the base pilfer, the three World Series appearances in the 1960s, his friendship with Buck O'Neil and his trade from the Cubs.
His best anecdote involved his first All-Star appearance, in 1967. Brock arrived for the 3 p.m. game at 9 a.m. He was nervous, but wanted to appear confident, sitting at his locker looking like he knew what his doing. A young fellow walked by and Brock put in a request for a soda.
Turned out it wasn't a clubhouse attendant.
"It was Tom Seaver," Brock said of the Mets' rookie pitching sensation.
And a nice guy. Seaver got the soda.
