Aug. 1, 2001

LP is born to Jacole Prince. Her birth certificate does not name her father.

October 2005

At age 4, LP is diagnosed with failure to thrive. She is scheduled to return to Children’s Mercy Hospital for outpatient care, but her mother does not take her to those appointments.

Jan. 31, 2006

Prince finally takes LP to the hospital. At 26 pounds, the girl has lost so much weight that she is hospitalized.

Feb. 1, 2006

According to documents filed the next day in Jackson County Family Court, Prince “has stated that she intentionally withholds food” so LP “will not defecate and urinate frequently.” The court places LP and her 2-year-old sister in state custody.

Prince says her household’s only income is $389 in food stamps.

Feb. 22, 2006

The two girls are temporarily placed with Marcus Benson, who is the father of the 2-year-old girl. Prince is not allowed to live with them.

March 2006

The court tells the Children’s Division to provide a parenting assessment and therapy to Prince. She is to have only supervised contact with her daughters.

June 2006

The court grants Prince unsupervised contact with LP and her sister.

August 2006

LP, just turned 5, is enrolled in kindergarten at Woodland Elementary School.

February 2007

Prince’s attorney files a motion stating that the children have had “frequent and meaningful contact” with Prince and that she has followed the direction of the Children’s Division. The attorney says that the only issue remaining with the court has been Prince’s living arrangement, and that on Jan. 30, 2007, she moved into an apartment in the 1300 block of Highland Avenue.

March 2007

Family Court finds that the two girls no longer need services and orders their release from court jurisdiction.

April 2007

Before her first school year ends, LP stops going to kindergarten at Woodland.

June 22, 2012

More than five years later, a hotline call brings a Children’s Division worker and Kansas City police officers to the Highland Avenue apartment. They find LP, now 10, barricaded in a closet while her mother is out with LP’s two sisters, 8 and 2.

LP, severely dehydrated and malnourished, weighs 32 pounds. She is taken to a hospital.

Later that day, authorities find Prince, 29, and the two younger sisters with Benson, 34, at another residence. Prince is arrested and the girls are taken into protective custody.
