But diff’rent sort of poem this is, in case you thought it was.
No Dasher, Dancer, jelly bowls or jolly elf to mention;
Instead, let’s talk of local quirks that garnered our attention
Which happened in this lively year that’s soon to draw a curtain
As ’09 fades to history, a process surely certain.Come spring we saw a ballpark honed by gleaming renovation;
With hopes that with the newness came a winning transformation.
Alas! At losing games the crew has proved a horrid knack;
The bright spot of the season, though — a Cy award for Zack.
Across the lot, much work was done on Arrowhead’s environs —
Yet on the grass there wasn’t much for us to be admirin’.
Amenities abound, you see — they’re spiffy, neat and keen…
The only thing that’s not improved? One little thing (the team.)There was a local hero earning spell of admiration:
Olathe teen won stellar fame at spelling bee for nation.
The words she spelled are difficult, and oh! You ought to see ’em:
Just try to use this word yourself — it’s spelled “Laodicean.”At City Hall, the drama played; the actors, there were many:
A settlement of lawsuit cost the city pretty penny.
While mayor’s ways of handling things made news across the nation;
The limelight for KC, alas, is scarcely adulation.
And council at its meetings showed how many gripes were bundled:
No wonder Kansas Citians are acting so disgruntled.
At mayor’s home, a lot of work was tackled, there’s no doubt;
While 12th and Oak saw manager abruptly ushered out.Yet rest assured, in downtown scene, not everything is stressful:
Arena bearing name of Sprint is proving quite successful.
And downtown got a rooftop pool, which swimsuit crowd attracted;
We bet the nearby workers gazing out are quite distracted.
And arts? The palace rises large, it’s just to south of Bartle
Where someday music — dance — will flow, as lots of other art’ll.
We watched all year as steel and beams aloft did quickly billow,
The shell itself a work of art...it looks like armadillo.The zoo? A hundred years in town, to all the folks it’s tellin’ —
Beginning work to build a house for polar bears to dwell in.
’Twas worry, though, that once it’s built, one flaw would soon declare:
If only thing that’s missing is a single polar bear.
But finally, a deal was struck, so thank a bear’s libido:
We’ll get on loan Nikita who was born in fair Toledo.In politics, it’s heating up, to take a new direction;
’Cause neither Kit nor Dennis will be seeking re-election.
And Kansas saw one guv who’s gone, another who’s a temp;
For Kathleen went to Washington to serve the president.
The Show Me State, it also got a diff’rent guv at helm,
But levels of E. coli seemed to occupy the realm.And all the year in politics, so many folks did bicker;
At least it meant to most of us the year went by much quicker.A scramble scrum is lining up for 2010, but gee —
The drink of choice at parties is not beer or wine but tea!So whether topic’s common folk or highfalutin leaders,
Why, never at a loss for words was paper or its readers.
We thank all those who love the news, who love to voice opinion;
Let 2010 be great for all who savor this dominion!
And let ’em write and let ’em read, and let ’em turn a phrase;
But as for now, our wish for you is “Happy Holidays!”
