OPENING EVENTS

Saturday, June 9

10 a.m. Brief building dedication followed by museum opening.

10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Jazz on the Nichols Plaza and Noguchi Court Terrace.

10:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Family activities, including art-making and demonstrations in Ford Learning Center, outdoor chalk drawing, strolling entertainers and more.

2 p.m. Lecture by Chris McVoy, principal partner for Steven Holl Architects, Atkins Auditorium.

4 p.m. Lyric Opera sampler, Atkins Auditorium.

5-8:30 p.m. Jazz on Nichols Plaza and Noguchi Court Terrace.

6 p.m. McVoy lecture repeated.

9 p.m. Museum closes.

Sunday, June 10

10 a.m. Museum opens.

10:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Family activities.

1 p.m. Performance by Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Atkins Auditorium.

2 p.m. KC Rep performance repeated.

4-7 p.m. Kansas City Ballet and Alvin Ailey dance company perform excerpts, Atkins Auditorium.

5-8:30 p.m. Jazz on Nichols Plaza and Noguchi Court Terrace.

7:30-8:30 p.m. Pearl Thuston-Brown, jazz piano, Atkins Auditorium.

9 p.m. Museum closes.

OTHER AMENITIES

On opening Saturday and Sunday: Audio-guided tours of the museum’s architecture, collection highlights, the “Manet to Matisse” exhibit and sculpture park will be available in the Bloch Building. The Reading Room in the Spencer Art Reference Library will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

PARKING

On opening Saturday and Sunday: Parking in the museum garage is free. Also, a free parking shuttle service will run every 15 minutes from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday. The shuttle will pick up passengers at UMKC, 51st and Oak streets; Midwest Research Institute, 425 Volker Blvd.; and Kauffman Legacy Park, 4801 Rockhill Road. It will drop off riders at three museum campus locations.

ADMISSION

Museum admission is free

Admission to the two new special exhibitions — “Manet to Matisse: Impressionist Masters From the Marion and Henry Bloch Collection” and “Developing Greatness: The Origins of American Photography, 1839 to 1885” — will be free June 9 and 10.

Free timed tickets can be reserved online at nelson-atkins.org. On June 9 and 10 free exhibition tickets will be available on the parking shuttles and at the Visitor Services Desk in the Bloch Building.

Beginning June 12, timed tickets admitting non-members to both shows cost $8 for adults, $7 for seniors (over 55) and $5 for students, age 13-19 with ID.

MUSEUM HOURS

Beginning June 12: Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Closed Monday.

The Bloch Building lobby, including the café, will open at 9:30 a.m. daily, except Mondays. It will stay open 30 minutes after the museum closes each day.

The museum store is open during regular museum hours. The Spencer Art Reference Library is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday; 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday; and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
