•SCHOOL: Orrick •YEAR: Senior •SPORT: Football Kaufman, a quarterback, saved his biggest game of the season for the state title game. He ran for three touchdowns and threw for another touchdown in the Bearcats’ 34-28 double-overtime victory over Thayer as Orrick won its second straight Missouri Class 1 title. Kaufman ran for 90 yards, but his biggest run came on the game-winning quarterback sneak. As a starting quarterback, Kaufman finished his career with...

Hogan Prep: The big question surrounding the Hogan Prep basketball team this season is who will fill the void left by guard Marcus Denmon, who averaged 28.5 points per game and is now at Missouri. There won’t be just one player who fills that role, but instead the Rams will look to a group of players. Dawon Cummings and Eric Austin seem to be two of the most likely to step up and score points.
Bishop Miege: The Stags lost Travis Releford — The Star’s All-Metro player of the year last season — but at least a couple of East Kansas League coaches still consider them the team to beat in the league. Junior point guard Trevor Releford — Travis’ brother — is bigger and stronger this season, Stags coach Rick Zych said, and he may take on more of the scoring burden. Junior Justin McCay is another returning starter,
Bishop Miege: Bishop Miege finished fourth at the 5A state tournament last season despite returning only one starter from its 2006-2007 state championship team. However, the experience the young Stags gained last year should pay off in a big way this season. Miege returns eight girls who earned key minutes last season.
Blue Springs: Coach Mark Spigarelli, formerly of Pembroke Hill, now has control of the Wildcats and calls this squad “the deepest team I’ve ever coached.” That’s quite the proclamation from a man who once won back-to-back state championships. The Wildcats have experience with seniors Drew Roberts, an All-Metro first-team pick last year, and 6-foot-2 center Bryonna Snow, who has signed to play at Cincinnati.

There is plenty the Blue Springs South High School football team accomplished this season. Still, it was hard for coach Greg Oder to think about the good things following the Jaguars’ 25-20 loss to Hazelwood Central in the Missouri Class 6 football championship game last Saturday night in St. Louis.
OFFENSE DEFENSE
Life goes on for the Raytown South football team. “The sun came up on Saturday,” coach David Allie joked. “I didn’t know if it would, but it did. What can you do but be happy? We had a great season.”
Joe Kaufman started to speak, then looked at his coach and quickly and painfully sprang to his feet.
EMPORIA, Kan. | The disappointment was evident. But through it all, St. Thomas Aquinas senior guard Kyle Brown knew he and his teammates had still accomplished something special.
