Quentin Jennings, 31, leaned closer to his ex-girlfriend and said, “That girl over there is really beautiful, and I want to talk to her.”
It was December 2007, and Quentin was in a Kansas City bar, hanging out with his ex and gazing across the room at 28-year-old Melissa Hewitt. When Melissa’s date went off to get another drink, Quentin approached her.
“We’d met briefly a week earlier, but I don’t think he remembered,” Melissa says.
For Quentin, third time was the charm. A few weeks later, he was out with friends and saw Melissa there. “I’m going to marry that girl,” Quentin thought. That evening, he asked her out.
Melissa: “Quentin was personable, outgoing and funny.”
Quentin: “Melissa was beautiful and smart, and we shared many of the same values. Melissa possessed the qualities I looked for in a best friend and wife.”
The unfolding: Almost immediately, they were together every day. They quickly became best friends. After work, they’d go to the gym and then out to dinner. As their friendship deepened, their love grew.
The proposal and wedding: In June 2008, they were in Wichita for a friend’s wedding.
During the reception, Quentin, who’s normally very social, started to act strange. He said he didn’t feel well and wanted to get back to Melissa’s parents’ house on a nearby lake. By the time they got there, she was tired; he couldn’t persuade her to go for a boat ride. So he convinced her to sit on the deck.
There he pulled out a ring and asked her to marry him. “I was surprised and excited,” Melissa says.
They were married Jan. 17, 2009, in Kansas City.
Favorite shared activities: They enjoy working out and taking walks together. They enjoy traveling and entertaining friends and family.
Careers: Quentin works in the corporate transactional department at the Polsinelli law firm, where he is a partner. Melissa is a part-time respiratory therapist at St. Joseph Medical Center and a community volunteer.
Family: They live in Kansas City with their young son.
What keeps their relationship strong: They communicate well and truly value their friendship. They parent together and enjoy an occasional date night.
The qualities they most appreciate in each other:
Melissa: “Quentin is compassionate, trustworthy and a friend to everyone. He’s the first person I want to talk to about anything.”
Quentin: “Melissa is a great mom. She’s so intelligent and she challenges me mentally. She can accomplish anything.”
