A dog that broke through the ice of a private lake was rescued Tuesday by the Prairie Township Fire Protection District.

Neighbors spotted the dog struggling about noon and notified its owners.

When rescuers arrived, the dog was about 30 feet from the shore of the lake off Timberlake Drive near Greenwood in Jackson County. Several people were trying to get the dog, described as a rare hunting breed, to grab a stick tied to a rope.

Firefighter and paramedic John Pickard, in a buoyant rescue suit, crawled across the ice to reach the dog.

Pickard also broke through into the water but grabbed the dog’s collar and they were both pulled to shore by a tether.
