Are ginkgo trees hardy in the KC area?

Are Gingko trees really hardy for our area? In light of the emerald ash borer plight, I am hesitant to plant anything that may soon succumb to disease or pest. Thanks - Christine

Answer:

Ginkgo is a great tree for the KC area. The only issue is that it can be slow growing. There are many wonderful trees around town. So yes, ginkgo would be an excellent replacement for the doomed ash trees. Ginkgo has a wonderful fall color, buttery yellow and the good news is the leaves all drop at once. Plant it, you will enjoy it - Dennis, Johnson County K-State Research and Extension
