Are Gingko trees really hardy for our area? In light of the emerald ash borer plight, I am hesitant to plant anything that may soon succumb to disease or pest. Thanks - Christine

Answer:

Ginkgo is a great tree for the KC area.  The only issue is that it can be slow-growing. There are many wonderful trees around town. So yes, ginkgo would be an excellent replacement for the doomed ash trees. Ginkgo has a wonderful fall color, buttery yellow and the good news is the leaves all drop at once. Plant it, you will enjoy it - Dennis - Johnson County K-State Research and Extension
