Parties, movies and cocktails? That’s what I call trick-or-treat for adults.
And there’s plenty to get into this Halloween Friday. Whether you’re all about haunted houses and Worlds of Fun, or you want to dance with DJ Sku at VooDoo Lounge a la Party Monster 9, Kansas City is definitely a Halloween kind of town.
My top picks for thrills and chill:
Never miss a local story.
Tarot readings, fine whiskey and cocktails in a dimly lit lounge? Julep is bringing a mystic vibe to Westport this Halloween, and there’s a costume party, too — the winner’s tab is on the house. There’s even a seasonal drink: Return of the Great Pumpkin (Tapatio Reposado Tequila, honey, cinnamon, pumpkin, hot water). I bet Linus never saw that coming. Skeleton Key will do readings from 7 to 10 p.m. at Julep, 4141 Pennsylvania Ave., No. 104. JulepKC.com.
If you want something more upbeat, JT Quick will be rocking One Percent, 1520 Grand Blvd. The electronic music dance club is putting on a high-energy costume party. Doors open at 10 p.m. $10 cover. OnePercentKC.com.
Looking for that Halloween hip-hop turn-up? Thriller 2014 has an intriguing motto — “Alter egos welcome, costumes encouraged.” DJ Q will spin the sounds, and there will be a zombie horror fashion show and costume contest. $10-$20 cover includes two drink tickets and small bites. The party, 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., is at The Promise, 1814 Oak St. For details, follow DJ Q at Twitter.com/DJQ_KC.
If there’s any time to do the Time Warp again, it’s Halloween. Screenland Armour is putting on a special screening of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” for anyone who doesn’t mind shouting at the screen, singing and going beyond bizarre by giving in to the fantastical freak show. Tickets are $10. See it at 9 or 11 p.m. at 408 Armour Road. Screenland.com.
My favorite way to spend Halloween is with arguably Kansas City’s best band: Hearts of Darkness. Every year the afrobeat group comes to Davey’s Uptown, 3402 Main St., for “Thee Halloween Show,” with performances by D/Will and Heartfelt Anarchy. Naturally, there will be a costume contest. Tickets are $10. Doors open at 9 p.m. Facebook.com/HeartsOfDarkness.
Burlesque Downtown Underground is all treats, tickle and tease as the ladies bring their sultry show to the Kill Devil Club, 31 E. 14th St., on Friday. Handcrafted cocktails and a sensual dance show sound like the perfect date night this Halloween. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets, $20, can be purchased at Ticketfly.com.
