Boulevard’s latest limited-edition Smokestack Series beer, Grainstorm Black Rye IPA, hit bar taps yesterday. Distribution to stores starts today.
The winter seasonal combines the pungent aroma and piney, citrusy hop flavor of an IPA with the richness and medium-to-full body of a darker, maltier beer. Don’t let the almost-black color of this beer fool you — because it’s brewed with pale malt and roasted wheat, it’s not as roasty-tasting as other intensely dark beers.
Grainstorm gets its spicy kick from rye, which helps the beer stand up nicely to spicy sausage, peppery cheese and barbecue.
Boulevard’s description of Grainstorm reads like a March weather forecast: “A high-pressure system of pungent hops collides with a stationary front of barley, wheat and rye. The forecast: A veritable monsoon of flavor.”
