In the last year, my family made a major lifestyle decision and decided it was time to leave our home of almost 20 years and move to a new home.
Enough said? Do you get the picture?
There were months and months of sorting, throwing and downsizing all the things that one collects over so many days, weeks, months and years.
We moved “out south,” you know, the area that many of my urban friends deem way too suburban for their liking. We took the plunge and haven’t looked back. Okay, we have looked back a little when the commute to great food spots seems longer and longer.
What a happy day when I discovered the Beauty of the Bistro food truck. Each Wednesday you can find the truck parked at the intersection of 199th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Stillwell.
The menu is creative and fun, and the price of a sandwich that is tasty is just $5. This definitely shakes up my lunchtime routine.
Recently, I was working diligently on a food project with Kathy Moore, my business partner of 30-plus years. When we surfaced from our brainstorming session, the hands of the clock lined up and it was time for a lunch break.
Imagine the excitement when I suggested to Kathy that it was Wednesday and we could take a foodie field trip if she was game. She is always game, so off we scurried to Beauty of the Bistro.
We knew we had a winner when firefighters were lined up to place their orders. We chatted with one of the fireman who said that he was always glad when he had the Wednesday shift because that meant a great lunch and a great value.
It took us quite a while to narrow down the orders as there were just too many great sounding ones to choose from. We settled on a Buffalo Chicken Wrap and Roast Beef. Our order was ready before we knew it.
We returned to my home and enjoyed a quiet, tasty lunch. Of course, we compared notes and tried to concoct the recipe ingredients that were used in these great, quick, spur-of-the-moment lunches we had just enjoyed.
The Buffalo Chicken Wrap consisted of shredded chicken, hash browns, cream cheese, cheddar cheese and buffalo sauce wrapped in a flour tortilla and grilled while the Roast Beef Provolone was served on the most amazing marbled rye bread spread with artichoke aioli and topped with fresh spinach.
When the next Wednesday rolled around, I texted my husband and coerced him to join me. We shared a Boom Boom burger. Truly it was an off the chart taste sensation. A one-half pound burger with pepper jack cheese, broccoli slaw, salsa and jalapeno aioli.
He agreed that it was worth the extra miles he had to drive to meet me for such a taste treat. Oh yes, and when we pulled up to the truck there were five firefighters in line ahead of us. You know when our treasured public servants place the stamp of approval on food, it is hands down the best.
I spoke with the owner, Sidney Fish, and she told me that she and her mom, Carol O’Keefe, started the food truck in June of 2012, with years of catering experience already under their belts.
She said that you can count on the truck always being in Stillwell each Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., but she highly recommends that you follow her onFacebook
for an up-to-the-minute report of all her activities. She is always ready to cater or go to an office by request.
Color me happy that the Beauty of the Bistro food truck is in my area. I see a future of Wednesday lunch dates.
