Drinking at the library is generally frowned upon – unless it’s for a good cause.

On Friday, September 27, the

downtown branch of the Kansas City Public Library hosts the 2nd annual Books Brews, a “literacy crawl” that benefits Reach Out and Read Kansas City

, a nonprofit that promotes early literacy in the community.

The event is modeled after a bar crawl through four Kansas City neighborhoods: 18th Vine, Westport, the Crossroads Arts District and Waldo. The food and drink is provided by local restaurants, bars, breweries and distilleries.

Boulevard is providing the beer, Darkhorse Distillery is bringing a batch of reserve bourbon, Farm to Market is bringing bread and Babycakes, cupcakes. Other participating restaurants include Remedy, Blue Grotto and Summit Grill Bar

of Lee’s Summit.

Tickets to the fundraiser cost $25 each and come with two drink tickets and one raffle ticket. Raffle prizes include Chiefs tickets, Sporting KC tickets, movie passes and a Kindle Fire.

About 55 people came to last year’s Books Brews event, says Megan Sturges, executive director of Reach Out and Read Kansas City. Sturges says 250 are expected at this year’s event, which is “very close to selling out.”

After partygoers check out from the library at 8, they can walk across the street to the afterparty on the rooftop at

John’s Big Deck. For more information, check out the Books Brews Eventbrite page.
