Back in the 1930s, Lenexa was home to an abundance of spinach farms — and was known as the Spinach Capital of the World.
These days, the Kansas City suburb isn’t home to many spinach farms, but its annual spinach festival continues to grow.
City officials are expecting more than 10,000 people at the 30th annualLenexa Spinach Festival
, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. September 7 at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park (87th Street and Lackman Rd).
On the family-friendly festival’s agenda: Live music, contests for baby crawling and rock skipping, art and antique booths, wine and craft beer and, of course, lots of food made with spinach. That includes a world record-breaking salad made with 150 pounds of Popeye’s favorite leafy green.
With that much spinach around, it’s no surprise that The Sailor Man will be hanging out for photo ops between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. (Olive Oyl will be there, too).
The festival’s annual spinach recipe contest will be judged by Fox 4 reporter Matt Stewart and Chow Town contributorsJasper Mirabile and Kimberly Winter Stern
. Winners for best appetizer, salad, entree and dessert will take home $100 cash prizes. Recipe entries are due the day of the festival, so you’ve still got a week to perfect that spinach ice cream.
