. But its frozen treats are building a cool reputation, too.
This month, Travel and Leisure named Kansas Cityone of the best U.S. cities for ice cream. Now Yahoo! Travel has KC at the top of its “5 Cities for Ultimate Snow Cones” list
, which also includes Baltimore, New Orleans and Hawaii. Yep, the whole state is famous for what locals call “shave ice.”
According to the travel site, “Kansas City may be on the cutting edge of the foodie-friendly snowball” thanks toLittle Freshie
, a from-scratch soda and snow cone shop at 811 W. 17th St. Little Freshie’s all-natural snow cone flavors include watermelon basil, pineapple and serrano pepper, strawberry rhubarb and (my favorite) mango ginger.
Other snow cone shops in the metro includeMiami Ice, 1624 W. 39th St., Tropical Sno, 13416 Holmes Rd., and Brain Freeze Shaved Ice, 6270 Jefferson Ave. in Parkville. In Lawrence, the go-to snow cone spot is Tad’s Tropical Sno
, 939 Iowa St.
For slightly more portable popsicles or ice pops, I recommendPaleterias Tropicana, which has locations in KC as well as Kansas City, Kan., Shawnee and Independence. The Star’s Jenee Osterheldt has even more recommendations for frozen treats in KC here.
