Channel your inner Joey Chestnut and indulge in an American classic Thursday — it is National Hot Dog Day, after all. (But don’t feel obligated to down 60 dogs in under 10 minutes).
If you don’t feel like firing up the grill, there are plenty of local options to feast on franks.
New York Dawg Pound in Shawnee has a full menu of “dawgs,” some named after popular dog breeds. Order the Boxer and you’ll get a hot dog topped with blue cheese crumbles, bacon, red onions and sweet mustard.
Never miss a local story.
The Brick, located downtown, also offers a variety of hot dogs, from the Kansas City Reuben Dog with Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, thousand island dressing and a pickle, to the Oklahoma, a Boulevard beer battered, deep fried hot dog wrapped in bacon. You’ll need a hearty appetite for that one.
KC Smoke Burgers in Westport may specialize in hamburgers, but the hot dogs are worth considering. The Crunch Dog is topped with fried onions, Swiss cheese and bacon, but if you want that extra kick, the Spicy Dog comes topped with jalapenos, Sriracha sauce and pepper jack cheese.
Sonic restaurants will also be offering $1 All-American and Chili Cheese Dogs on Thursday if you want to celebrate on a budget.
