Beer nerd alert: Saison-Brett, a limited-release Boulevard brew, hits taps and retail shelves today. The farmhouse ale, based on the Kansas City brewery's popular Tank 7, is dry hopped and bottle conditioned with various yeasts, including a wild strain called Brettanomyces, which gives the beer an earthy quality that pairs well with portobello mushroom, nutty Gruyere and English Stilton, a blue cheese.

This year's late and heavy snows delayed the start of the local asparagus season two weeks to a month later than usual, so it will last only about six weeks.

Everywhere I go, I find brands with a conscience. Maybe it started with Toms shoes and their popular One-for-One movement -- buy a pair and a pair goes to an impoverished child.
I know it's real when the seat belt buckles and the lap bar comes down. I'm locked in a four-passenger car set on a track spanning 1,345 feet. There's no turning back, but my back is turned. I chose the seat that doesn't look the five-story ascension in the face. But I can hear the rickety sound of the climb, and my fingers curl tighter and tighter around the safety bar until my nails dig into my palms. The pain reminds me that this is not a nightmare. It's happening.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: The time for school graduation ceremonies is upon us again. Unfortunately, I've been witnessing that in recent years, polite applause and inward pride are steadily losing ground to ear-piercing whistles and hooting and hollering like banshees upon hearing a loved one's name read.
