High-tech toilets can be a high-end item

I enjoy your columns on the latest technology currently available on the plumbing market. You have given many homeowners ideas for bathroom jobs, and I’m presently planning a new bathroom. I remember reading about the new electric “hi-tech” toilets, and I would like to install one. My question is, if these toilets run on electrical power, how do you get them to flush during a power outage?

Hi-tech or “smart” toilets have been getting a lot of attention lately, partly because of new technology allowing you to link up your smartphone with your smart toilet. Among other things, this lets you play your favorite music through the built-in toilet stereo sound system. Staying plugged in while you “tune out” on the toilet is just one of the many advantages of a smart toilet.

Other features can include: full bidet washing with blow drying, hands-free motion-activated lid and seat operation, mode lighting, remote control touch pad, heated seat and foot warmer, and power-driven dual-flushing technology.

You’ve probably guessed by now that a smart toilet can be a high-end item. With that in mind, many higher-end houses do have standby generator systems installed to power the entire house during an electrical outage. However, if you want the latest in smart toilet technology and you don’t have a generator, no worries. Some very smart toilets include battery backup systems that can power the toilet, even if your power poops out.
