This is regarding a dispute between my grandson John Vitale and a roofing contractor, Carlos Rodriguez. My daughter hired Rodriguez to re-roof her home in the spring of 2006. She gave him a check for $7,000 with the remainder of the contract of $6,690 to be paid at the completion of the work. My daughter later wrote a check for the balance, which Rodriguez cashed July 16.

In May I checked into refinancing my home through Lending Tree. A Liberty Home Loans representative came to my home, we filled out paperwork and I gave him a check dated May 8 for $450 that was to be for an appraisal.

I would like to warn anyone who plans to attend an event at the Sprint Center to be aware of the scam that has been perpetrated against other patrons. A business associate of mine who resides in Florida attended a concert and purchased one T-shirt for his wife for $45. When reviewing his credit card statement he found that he was billed $450. This identical scam was pulled on another individual that same evening, and after contacting your column, this victim was reimbursed by the...

I have been a longtime customer of Allied Waste Services for my yard waste. About a month ago, the wheel of their green container broke off. I called Allied and was told that a new shipment of containers had come in, and I could expect a replacement shortly. I was told to place the broken container in a location where the company could pick it up. It’s sitting in my driveway.

My car was taken at 17th and the Paseo by a woman who thought the car was hers. I gave the police information about the person I bought the car from and told them I was waiting on a title. The woman could not tell them who sold her the car. The police took me to the Linwood police station, where the woman had moved the car, to let me retrieve my property. I discovered that the ignition was broken and told the police. Later that day, the woman produced her own evidence showing that...

On April 4 I sent the attached letter to Pioneer Electronics. As of May 14 I have not heard from them. Essentially, Pioneer has had numerous problems with this DVD drive. I have replaced it once and need to replace it again. It is a long process, and I don’t want to have to do it again. I am just asking for my money back or a newer model that doesn’t have this apparent design flaw. — R.B., Independence

Late last winter I decided I needed a backup heat source for power outages. I live on propane and asked around about ventless propane heaters. I was told Glo-Warm units were made in the U.S., so I went online and found a place called Master Distributors. I picked out a model and placed the order. The salesperson told me that I needed a larger unit than the model I had selected, and that I needed a blue flame unit instead of infrared.

My mother, who is 85, lives in her own home. She tends to get a bit panicky when things are not going smoothly, and April 16 there was a pipe leak. Instead of calling me, she called Roger the Plumber. She was quoted a price of about $280, but after the technician began the job, he told her the job was going to cost $1,180, which she paid.

I needed party rental equipment for my wedding. I found this great-looking Web site for Celebration Party Rentals in Lee’s Summit. I placed my order over the phone, gave them my credit card and paid my bill. I received 11 tables, 72 chairs but only eight plates, knives and forks. Celebration quickly corrected the issue.
