It’s pretty much universal: You might hate shopping for a bathing suit, shorts or other summer apparel, but you’re OK with outfitting those feet for the summer.
What all-American woman — along with Imelda Marcos — doesn’t love her shoes?
And the fashion gurus are OK with telling you just how to make sure you show off that pedicure in style.
What you don’t want to do, unless you’re younger than 20, is wear high heels with short skirts or shorts.
Never miss a local story.
“With shorts, a stacked heel or wedge is definitely better,” says Bridgette Raes, style expert and president of Bridgette Raes Style Group (bridgetteraes.com). “Shorts and stilettos don’t work.”
What does work is a wedge, says Sofia Wacksman, vice president of trend for Kohl’s department stores.
“Give any summer look the finishing touch with the perfect shoe,” says Wacksman, adding that wedges and strappy sandals are selling well this summer. “Pair a colored boat shoe with a striped skirt for a nautical flare, or try cork wedge sandals with a colorful maxi-dress for the perfect festive outfit.”
You might think you’re being down-to-earth if you’re wandering around in flats. But a little heel can be good for your back and feet, especially if you spend much of the work week standing.
“Sandals with a little lift are always better than completely flat sandals,” Raes says. “Flat sandals rarely have support and can be painful for the feet. Instead, look for a low heel or wedge.”
That said, sometimes it’s best to look down-to-earth, and we’ve found some classic shoes and sandals — both with and without that lift — that will ensure you’re stepping out into the heat in style.
