His appearance will be the first event in a local series celebrating "Hemingway at 100." </p><p> The biographer's latest work, <i>Hemingway: The Final Years</i> (reviewed elsewhere in this section), concludes his examination of the life and art of the Nobel Prize-winning writer who spent part of his early career at <i>The Kansas City Star</i>. </p><p> <i>Hemingway: The Final Years</i>, the fifth volume in Reynolds' major work, covers the years 1940-1961, the period during which Hemingway wrote <i>The Old Man and the Sea</i> and several other late works. Reynolds also is scheduled to sign copies of his biography. </p><p> The lecture is at 7:30 p.m. at Unity Temple, 707 W. 47th St. For a complimentary ticket, call the Central Ticket Office, 235-2700; after reservations have been made, tickets can be picked up at the Plaza Library, 4801 Main St.; the South Library, 201 E. 75th St.; or the Unity Temple. </p><p> The "Hemingway at 100" observance is co-sponsored by the Kansas City Public Library, <i>The Kansas City Star</i>, the Writers Place and the Fine Arts Theatre. </p><p> Other events in the series: </p><p> <LI> <b>July 10-11</b>: "To Have and Have Not," a 1945 film by Howard Hawks and partly based on a Hemingway novel, is scheduled to be screened at 1 p.m. both days at the Fine Arts, 5909 Johnson Drive. Tickets cost $4. Discussions led by Tom Poe, who teaches film and media studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, will follow the screenings. </p><p> <LI> <b>July 18</b>: A bus tour of Hemingway's Kansas City will be offered at three times: 2, 3 and 4 p.m. Each tour will begin with a talk at <i>The Star</i>'s building, 1729 Grand Blvd., by Mark Zieman, the newspaper's editor and vice president. Tickets cost $4. For reservations, call 234-4636. </p><p> <LI> <b>July 21</b>: Area writers and educators will discuss Hemingway's work and his place in American literature at 7 p.m. at the Writers Place, 3607 Pennsylvania Ave. Participants will include Michelle Boisseau, Tom Poe and Steve Shapiro; the panel will be moderated by Steve Paul. Tickets cost $5 at the door.
